Sometimes being down on your luck can work out so you end up feeling luckier than you ever were. For a Michigan resident, her daily walk of 3 miles to and from work, five days a week, wasn’t because she enjoyed the outdoors. Her car had broken down a year ago, and there was never enough money to get a new one.
But one day, on her walk home from work, she stumbled upon a plastic bag. Inside? More cash than she had ever seen before. Diane Gordon’s car broke down a year ago last February, and since then, the Michigan resident has walked nearly three miles to and from work five days out of the week.
As she recalled to FOX affiliate WJBK, Gordon was walking home on Jan. 21 when she spotted something out of the ordinary on the ground while stopping at a gas station for a snack. “I looked down on the ground and found a plastic bag with a large sum of money in it,” she told WJBK. “When you turned it over, there was even more money.”
But for the woman who had her own share of bad luck, she never hesitated on what to do with the nearly $15,000 – find its owner.
This doesn’t belong to me, I need to call a police officer,” she remembered thinking to herself after finding the cash.
Thankfully when Police Chief Dan Keller of the White Lake Township Police Dept. arrived, a quick search turned up just what they needed. “There were wedding cards with a name on it, and we were able to get the money back to them,” Police Chief Dan Keller of the White Lake Township Police Department told reporters. The couple had just gotten married that very day.
“She didn’t hesitate; she didn’t question it,” Keller said of Gordon. “This doesn’t happen very often, that someone finds a large sum of money and turns it in.” Sixty-five year old Gordon doesn’t see it that way. “All I did was return something that didn’t belong to me,” she said.
But Stacy Connell, the wife of an officer who also responded to Gordon’s phone call, disagreed. She felt Gordon deserved something special. So she set up a GoFundMe campaign in the hopes of helping Gordan raise enough to get a new vehicle. And in early February, the fund surpassed $66,000. And thanks to Szott Auto Group, she received a green Jeep Compass.
“She is literally one of the nicest people I have ever met, and if anyone deserves it, it’s her,” said Jeff Schneider from the auto dealership. Gordon couldn’t believe her luck. “I am floored,” she said. “I am having a hard time keeping it in. I am just so excited.”
“I absolutely love it,” she added. “It’s got a steering wheel warmer and a backup camera; all things I’ve never had before.” But Gordon’s good deeds won’t stop. She already said she plans to offer rides to any coworkers who need one. “I’ll give them a ride home and pay it forward,” she said. Watch below to see the heartwarming story of Gordon’s kind deed.
