It sounds like a plot straight out of a horror movie.
A man gets separated from his hiking group at more than 15,000 feet up on the Peruvian mountains. Nothing around you is visible due to the heavy fog that covers the path. But then, in the middle of the fog, you see a shape appear and begin walking toward you.
But instead of the big, bad monster, it’s a medium-sized dog with no owner, who apparently was there to guide British tourist “The Blonde Englishman’ (as he is known on social media) down the mountain. Maybe he was hoping the man had doggy treats?
Regardless, the Brit said his group had planned the Santa Cruz circuit, near the city of Huaraz, when he got separated from his friends. He had been hoping he could find his way up to the top to the Punta Unión pass at 15,000ft above sea level. But snow, ice and thick fog had made him lost with no idea of how to move forward.
But then this happy dog just appeared out of the fog in front of him and began wagging his tail. The Brit filmed some of this crazy experience. In the video, he can be heard asking the dog, “What on earth are you doing up here? How did you get here?'” He then points up the mountain. ‘We need to go somewhere up there. Ok you lead the way. If we get lost, I’m blaming you, you are in charge now.’
I decided to trust his knowledge of the mountain,” the Brit said.
The Brit said he was shocked that a dog was wandering so high up in the mountains. But even more stunned that the he seemed to know how to get the man where he was heading.
Guide this doggy did. He turned and the man followed the dog around the routes and eventually he saw a sign that led the way to Punta Unión. He was thrilled that the dog had led him without getting that made him thrilled because it pointed out where he needed to – Punta Unión
Instead of the dog wandering back off into the fog, the Brit said that the dog sat next to him while he waited for the other hikers to arrive. Once they arrived, the stray dog seemed determined to keep near the hikers.
The Brit explained that when they reached the top the pair waited in silence together for the other hikers to arrive. Once they did, instead of leaving, the stray dog seemed determined to keep his newfound friends on the right path. The Brit said that when they arrived at camp, 13.5 miles later, not only had his guide dog come with them, but another stray dog was waiting inside the camp and stayed with the campers and then kept up with the group on the next day’s hike.
When the hikers made it back to a village, the Brit said that a local resident said that the dogs in the area like to find hikers and follow them up and around on the mountain, as they were truly trained guides for the mountain.
So, if you ever find yourself lost on the mountainside, maybe you’ll find a dog walking out of the fog to guide you home. Something I think we all would enjoy.
