Secrets aren’t secret. They’re just hidden treasures… – Stephen White

When Suzette Hall, founder of Logan’s Legacy 29, received a call from a concerned Los Angeles resident, she knew this was a rescue mission that couldn’t wait. A small dog had been wandering the neighborhood for months, dodging cars and avoiding people. Recently, neighbors noticed the pup had a secret.

Her belly was growing rapidly. “She had been on the streets since August,” Hall said. “She would sit in the middle of the street and almost got hit so many times.” And with the added stress of the pup being pregnant, the need to rescue her became even more important.

The pup, later named Frita, had become a familiar sight in the area. Despite multiple attempts by neighbors to help, her fear of humans kept her out of reach. “[T]he neighbors all tried to help, but she would just run,” Hall wrote. The community feared the worst—that Frita might give birth to puppies alone on the cold, unforgiving streets. Determined to prevent this, they reached out to Hall for help.

We couldn’t let her have her babies alone on the cold street,” Hall said.

Hall quickly teamed up with her friend Hilary Klein and rushed to the neighborhood. When they arrived, they saw a heartbreaking sight. “[The] poor mama was starving, eating anything she could find,” Hall said. It was clear Frita’s survival instincts had kicked in, but the struggle was taking its toll.

Hall had a plan. Knowing Frita’s hunger could be the key to capturing her, Hall set up a dog trap and opened a can of high-value food. Frita, though still cautious, couldn’t resist. “She would run if you looked at her, but when I opened the can … she froze and immediately started coming towards my trap,” Hall said. Within minutes, the scared pup was safely secured.

The rescue brought relief and joy to everyone involved. “She didn’t have to be unwanted or alone ever again or have her family alone on the streets somewhere,” Hall wrote. Frita’s journey to safety didn’t end there. She was placed into foster care with Alix Levy Smith of Second Leash On Life. For the first time in months, she had a warm bed and plenty of food. Frita settled in quickly, but her biggest surprise was yet to come.

The night before Thanksgiving, Frita gave birth to five healthy puppies—four boys and one girl. “She gave birth to [four] boys and [one] girl in a warm home,” Hall wrote. Frita and her babies are thriving under the care of their foster family. Soon, the entire family will be available for adoption through Second Leash On Life. Until then, Frita and her pups are enjoying the warmth and love they’ve finally found. “Sweet mama, your family is beautiful,” Hall wrote.
