What started as a typical day of work on location for one reporter, changed quickly into the scene of a crime.
In a move journalist Nicolás Krumm could never have predicted, an unexpected thief barged in during Krumm’s on-air report the other day in Chilé.
Krumm was on site that day to report on a recent burglary in a nearby residential neighborhood, but suddenly found himself a victim, as well.
But this was not just a regular hardened criminal ̶ it was an opportunistic parrot!
On assignment for news station CHV Noticias, Krumm was bemused at first when the sprightly green parrot landed on his shoulder. But what started out as a charming movie moment, quickly changed. The sly parrot snuggled in and took her chances ̶ suddenly nipping the reporter’s left earbud out and fleeing quickly from the scene of her crime.
Clearly the bird was a professional, considering she didn’t seem to care that the cameras were filming her during the entire crime spree.
Krumm stayed calm and finished his report. Later, he would tell a studio presenter, “ We were doing a midday broadcast and halfway through I felt a presence close to me and realized it was a parrot.”
I tried to alert the cameraman more than anything because it was picturesque. There are people who spend years training parrots to get them to rest on their shoulders.”
He went on to say, “The parrot had been watching us from railings nearby and I think my earpiece had got its attention because you can see it looking at it out of the corner of its eye before it takes it.”
‘It wasn’t something I wanted to comment on right at that second because we were dealing with a sensitive subject which was a residential break-in and I considered the most prudent thing was to carry on with the broadcast.’
Thankfully, during a search after Krumm had finished his story, he and his cameraman were able to locate the earpiece. The plucky parrot had dropped it in a clump of grass near where Krumm had given his news report.
