In a heartwarming display of compassion and community, Chestnuts Residential Home in Grimsby, Lincolnshire, recently pulled out all the stops to celebrate Vera Sak’s remarkable 103rd birthday. The care home transformed one of its day rooms into a magical club scene, complete with neon balloons, flashing lights, and glow sticks, creating an atmosphere of joy and celebration.
Vera was also joined by her two sons, Robert and John. “They’ve gone above the call of duty, I think the staff here are so wonderful,” John said. “Rather than just leave the residents to their own devices, there’s always something going on here,” he said.
It’s a two-way thing — some residents can’t respond as well as others, but this room today is full of joy.”
Care home manager Emma Phillips, who emphasized the importance of honoring residents’ special occasions. “We always plan special events for our residents’ birthdays,” she said, “but it’s not every day that someone turns 103.”
Tracy Atkins, the chief operating officer of the care home group, commended the staff’s dedication to making it a magical night for the residents. “I am so impressed by the dedication and hard work of our staff to plan and hold such an amazing event to celebrate Vera’s birthday.” The celebration exemplified the care home’s commitment to promoting the uniqueness and individuality of its residents, bringing joy and entertainment to their lives every day.
Vera’s rave-themed party, affectionately dubbed ‘Vera’s rave,’ was a testament to the vibrant spirit of the elderly resident and the caring environment fostered by the staff at Chestnuts Residential Home. As Vera danced and laughed surrounded by her family, friends, and care home staff, it was evident that age was truly just a number, and every birthday was worth celebrating.
John said the party was “full of joy” and he thanked the care home staff for ‘pushing the boat out.’ In a world often marred by negativity and division, stories like Vera’s remind us of the power of compassion, community, and the simple joy of coming together to celebrate life’s milestones.
As Emma Phillips said, “All of our care homes promote the uniqueness and individuality of their residents,” and Vera’s birthday bash exemplified just that. Instead of ignoring the occasion, the staff and residents celebrated one of their own and made sure that the great-grandmother was honored on a day not many get to live to.
