In a heartwarming tale that’s capturing the internet’s affection, one rescue dog has found an unlikely best friend in a quite unusual object. Ariana Smoak, 19, from South Carolina, shared the story of her pup, Sunny, and his unlikely bond with, of all things, a brick.
It all started when Smoak encountered a dog and her litter of sick puppies on the side of the road. Unable to turn away, Smoak took them all in, nursing them back to health with the help of her mom. While the rest of the puppies found forever homes, Sunny stayed with Smoak and her family. “We found homes for everyone but Sunny and we fell in love with him so we ended up keeping him,” Smoak said. “I wouldn’t change the experience for a thing.”
From the beginning, Sunny was playful but it was his peculiar attachment to a brick that kept his new family amused. The brick, originally meant to keep a rug flat, became Sunny’s constant companion. “Since he was a puppy, he would lay with it, kiss it and chew on it,” Smoak said. “Our other two dogs don’t care for it.”
Despite his family’s initial assumption that the obsession would fade, Sunny’s affection for the brick only grew stronger as he got older. Now, Sunny and his brick buddy are inseparable, with Sunny finding comfort and joy in the small, red brick. “We just realized as he got bigger and bigger that he would lay with it and found comfort being around it, so we just keep that one on the rug for him,” Smoak said.
My mom and I are so used to it being there we don’t notice it.”
Smoak’s tweet showcasing Sunny and his brick best friend quickly went viral, garnering over 134,000 retweets and 486,000 likes. The internet fell in love with Sunny’s adorable quirkiness, flooding the post with comments about how amazing and cute the dog and his brick was.
One person said: ‘Omg that’s so adorably weird!!!!’ while another person said: ‘Awww that’s so cute hahahahahah.’
And another person agreed and shared their joy over seeing Sunny with his brick in a tweet that said: ‘If this isn’t the cutest thing I’ve ever seen.’
Now Smoak is just glad to share her puppy with others, and help raise awareness about how important it is to spay and neuter your pets. And, to enjoy the random quirkiness of your animals while you can. “He’s an absolute goofball,” Smoak said. “He’s always happy even when he’s in trouble. He’s super silly.” Watch below for a look at this silly dog!
