It’s not often a newborn goes viral just seconds after being born. But for one family, and one tiny infant born in 2019, that’s just what happened.
While Tarsila Batista was pregnant, father-to-be Flávio Dantas spent months speaking to their unborn daughter. He wanted to make sure the baby knew she was loved.
“He always told her that he loved her so much,” Tarsila told Brazilian magazine SoNoticiaBoa. “‘Good morning’ when I went to work. He said ‘I’ll always be there,’ [and] kept stroking my belly.”
And the unborn Antonella noticed, her mama said. “Amazingly it always seemed, at the same time every day, she started to move.”
So when Antonella was born, and the nurses handed her to her parents for the first time, Flávio said “hello” to his daughter, the same thing he had done daily during the pregnancy. And shockingly, the infant grinned immediately.
“They put her on top of me, sleeping, and as soon as he spoke to her, Antonella opened her eyes and smiled,” Tarsila recalled of the beautiful moment.
“I can’t explain the feeling I felt at that moment,” Flávio said.
Every day I talked to my daughter in her mother’s womb, I always told her that I loved her, that Dad was there and that I was going to be the best father in the world. When she was born, how did she repay me? With the sweetest smile ever.”
The couple posted the picture, taken by a nurse, on their Instagram page, calling it “Quando vi minha família pela primeira vez,” which means “When I first saw my family” in English.
The picture instantly went viral, with commenters falling in love with the smile and the story behind it.

Tarsila added to the caption on Facebook, writing, “And it’s that moment that we forget all the pain and focus on the most sincere smile of all. Born my princess.”
Antonella is now 3, and her grin has followed her as she has grown. Her family continues to document how much they love their child online, and like to point out that the young girl made her debut smile on Father’s Day in Brazil.
Flávio told reporters that his bond with his child meant everything to him. “I thought I knew what a feeling of true love was,” he said. “Until I looked at that most sincere smile in the world. It was [there] that I could be sure what love is.”
