Lonely Little Cow Makes the Strangest Friends Ever – And Now These BFFs Are Inseparable

Nimai, a baby cow who was rescued from a difficult situation, found his way to Happy Compromise Farm + Sanctuary in New York when he was just a day old. The sanctuary saved him from neglect, offering him a second chance at life and the care he desperately needed.

As Nimai grew stronger, he still faced one challenge: he was the only calf at the sanctuary, surrounded by large adult cows. That all changed when two Great Pyrenees puppies, Tofu and Tempeh, joined the farm. Just three months old, these fluffy pups quickly formed a bond with Nimai, and the trio became inseparable.

@happycompromisefarm In mid-January, we got an urgent call about a newborn calf who needed immediate help. We had five minutes to decide if we could take him. Nimai was among more than 100 farmed animals removed from a nearby property after investigators discovered them living in poor conditions with limited access to food, water, and medical care. Nimai required urgent treatment, so the @Aspca Official Ⓜ️ quickly transported him into our care. Nimai was so tiny when he arrived, and winter in New York is harsh. He lived in a cozy barn stall with a heater, getting bottles and snuggles several times a day until he was big enough to slowly start meeting our other residents and cow herd. It was a while until he could fully integrate with them, but when he did he was embraced as the herd baby and never let out of their sight. Nimai is much bigger now, though still our smallest cow by far. His personality is so unique – he’s very quiet and calm, and loves nothing more than being adored. He seems much wiser than his nine months, and gives the BEST hugs. His closest friends, pups Tofu and Tempeh, are often by his side. We are completely obsessed with this little one and are just so grateful he found his way to us and was given a second chance. 💓 *** *** *** #happycompromisefarm #animalsanctuary #animalrescue #rescuedanimals #fortheanimals #greatpyranees #calf #cowsofinstagram #interspeciesfriendship #happilyeverafter #secondchances #rescuedandloved ♬ Sweet Love – Myles Smith

Born only two weeks apart, Nimai, Tofu, and Tempeh were perfectly matched in size and personality. The puppies, despite being young themselves, instinctively took on a protective role for their new friend. “[T]he pups seem to want to protect Nimai,” said Eryn Leavens, co-head of Happy Compromise Farm + Sanctuary.

They’ll be on each side of him, escorting him around the property… They are always so concerned with his well-being and make sure he’s never alone.”

The sanctuary staff love watching the three roam together, often joking that Tofu and Tempeh are Nimai’s personal bodyguards. Their boundless puppy energy contrasts with Nimai’s calm and laid-back personality, but somehow, their differences only make their friendship stronger.

“Cows are incredibly gentle animals, and Nimai is so tolerant of the puppies, even though their energy doesn’t always match his,” Leavens said. The special bond between Nimai, Tofu, and Tempeh has touched everyone at Happy Compromise Farm + Sanctuary.

As they continue to grow, the sanctuary is excited to see how their relationship blossoms over the years. The trio’s unique friendship is expected to last a lifetime. “They’re all so young, and it’s sweet to see them bond and protect each other in this way,” Leavens shared.

“What’s even more special about their relationship is that they will have an entire lifetime together.” From neglected beginnings to an unbreakable friendship, Nimai, Tofu, and Tempeh have found their happy ending together.

@happycompromisefarm Have you ever met a baby with their own body guards before?! As the smallest member of our rescued cow herd, Nimai is protected and beloved by everyone. They all look out for him and make sure he stays with the group. The pups take this job very seriously! Nimai came to us in January from a local neglect case. He was only a day old and was taken from his mom right away. He was so tiny and at first the rescuers thought he was dead. Tofu and Tempeh were born to an accidental litter just a few days before Nimai arrived, and got to spend their first few months with both of their parents and their siblings. They joined us when they were three months old and are the happiest pups around. All of the animals at the sanctuary have created such strong bonds with each other. There are sweet friend groups and chosen families, and a few of them are lucky enough to have their birth families with them as well. How special is it that Nimai and the pups found each other? The comfort and sweetness of this interspecies friendship is so precious. *** *** *** #happycompromisefarm #animalsanctuary #animalrescue #rescuedanimals #fortheanimals #greatpyranees #calf #cowsoftiktok #interspeciesfriendship #animalfamily #animalfriendship #bestfriendsgoals #squadgoalsachieved ♬ Friendship – Chris Stapleton
