Who knew going to get some clothes for your child could become a life-or-death situation? It’s enough to make a mom need a vacation. But Australia’s very own ‘Snake Hunter’ shared a video recently that showed him opening the dresser drawers up, before locating the unexpected danger – a five-foot Eastern Brown snake, the second deadliest snake in the world.
It was napping on a pile of the child’s folded up clothes, said The Snake Hunter, Mark Pelley. The mom, Pelley said, was going after an outfit for her 3-year-old son, when she discovered it.
Video posted on Facebook by Pelley shows the venomous snake coiled up in the right-hand side of the top drawer. “There it is!” Pelley said.
That’s not something you see every day.”
“Mum went to get some clothes for her son and found a large five-foot brown snake instead,” he posted on the video. “We figured out what happened. She carried in folded washing yesterday and as she was taking clothes from [the] clothes line, [the] brown snake crawled into it.”
Facebook users had a variety of opinions on the appearance of the snake. Some questioned how the mom didn’t notice the snake as she was putting up the clothing? “How could you put folded clothes with a 5 foot snake amongst them into drawers without realizing? I mean a 5ft brown would have some weight to it correct?” asked one commenter.
Pelley replied to the comment and addressed that the snakes are actually very lightweight, and often go unobserved by people. “They weigh next to nothing and seriously — this can happen to anyone,” he explained.
I’ve seen people carry brown snakes in their handbag or otherwise shopping bags. One day this could happen to you.”
Brown snakes “have caused more than half” of serious snake bites in South Australia during the past few decades, according to the Australian Museum.
“The venom contains powerful presynaptic neurotoxins, procoagulants, cardiotoxins and nephrotoxins, and successful envenomation can result in progressive paralysis and uncontrollable bleeding. Occasional fatalities have occurred as a result of bleeding into the brain due to coagulation disturbances,” the Australian Museum wrote in a statement, adding that the eastern brown snake “has the unfortunate distinction of causing more deaths from snake bite than any other species of snake in Australia.”
This isn’t the first time a deadly snake has been found in an odd place in Australia. In 2022, a woman found a venomous brown snake hiding in an antique radiogram cabinet. I don’t know about you, but this is enough to make me think about never putting up clothes again. Watch below for a look at this crazy find in a dresser!
