World’s Slowest ‘Thief’ Steals A Car – Owner Can’t Stop Laughing As He Tries To Get It Back

Well … this might have just been the world’s slowest every hijacking of a car. And it was all caught on video, thanks to one lucky man from Brazil, and a not-as-lucky thief.

Antônio Luiz Laghi said he was getting ready to leave home for an appointment at his doctor’s. He walked into the garage, he said, and went to open the driver-side door, when he caught the thief red-handed.

Or, actually, hanging upside down from the steering wheel. After all, it was a wild sloth. Immediately Laghi recorded the hilarious moment to share with his family. But his son, Bruno, knew others needed to see it so he posted it on TikTok. It has been viewed more than 1.4 million times, with 200,000 likes.

In the clip, they posted Laghi’s reaction to the sloth. “Look what I found in my car. I’m going to the doctor now, I had an appointment. I opened the car door and look what I find.” The insanely cute little ‘thief’ was slowly dangling from the steering wheel, all the while Laghi laughs at the silly sloth’s shenanigans.

His son explained why the windows were left open. “He usually leaves his car open at night because of the heat. When he left in the morning, he found the sloth inside the vehicle,” Bruno said. Of course, the wild sloth was slinking around, and assumed the open window meant a free night’s stay.

In what could also be billed as the world’s slowest animal release project, Laghi and his apartment’s doorman, got the sloth out and helped return it to a nearby wooded area. The viral video’s comment section found itself inundated with jokes. From, “Literally when you want to do something and laziness won’t let you,” to “How people from the United States think life is like for everyone here in Brazil.”

According to the World Wildlife Organization, sloths will spend the majority of their lives hiding in the canopy of the jungle trees. The trees help keep them protected from other wildlife, such as jaguars or eagles. But, these slow-moving creatures can and do, make their way to the ground.

However, no one has the numbers for how many of these silly sloths have decided to try their hand at carjacking – but I’m guessing there isn’t too many and maybe this one could set the first world record. Let’s hope the other sloths don’t get the same idea. But for now, this particular sloth is back home in the jungle, and hopefully sticking to the trees.
