A postal worker was strolling through a Texas neighborhood last week when she came across a small, fluffy creature lying on the sidewalk – but she knew she had to investigate. She walked up to it, quietly looking and suddenly the fluffball uncurled.
It was a kitten – clearly alone and in trouble. So she posted about the kitten on local rescue groups hoping that someone would be able to come out and pick up the poor little baby. She had to finish her route, but promised the kitten she would come back to check on her.
However, the following day, as she passed the same spot, she noticed the kitten still there, not having moved since the previous day. Recognizing that the kitten was sick and in desperate need of help the postal worker reached out to Coastal Bend Cat Rescuers, who promptly organized a rescue mission for the poor kitten, later named Thor.
“Thor seemed to have lost all hope,” Lindsay Haglund, foster coordinator with Coastal Bend Cat Rescuers, said. “She was severely dehydrated, anemic, infested with fleas, weak, exhausted, covered in mange, and appeared to be suffering from heat exhaustion.”
One of our team members, Nadia, dispatched her husband Mike to the location, and he effortlessly picked Thor up from the sidewalk; she didn’t resist being saved.”
Since Mike didn’t have a cat carrier at the time, he carefully carried Thor back to his car, placing her in the front seat for the entire journey home. She was so unwell and fatigued that she could hardly move, and her rescuers were immensely relieved that they reached her in time.
Now, Mike and Nadia serve as Thor’s foster parents, dedicating themselves to aiding her recovery. At just 6 weeks old, Thor weighs far less than she should, but each day sees a slight improvement in her condition. Following a vet examination, it was determined that Thor has an infection stemming from an injury on her leg, likely explaining why she was found curled up on the sidewalk, unable to move. She’s currently undergoing antibiotic treatment for the infection, with her foster mother using a heating pad to maintain her warmth until she gains weight and her body temperature stabilizes.
Despite her myriad health challenges, Thor is relishing life in her foster home, displaying immense gratitude for being off the streets. “Thor is quite spirited and affectionate,” Haglund said. “She always meows and eagerly greets her foster parents when they enter the room. She loves to be cuddled and petted.”
Thor will remain with her foster family for at least a month as she continues her recuperation journey. Once she’s fully healthy again, she’ll be put up for adoption, eagerly awaiting her forever home. For now, she is enjoying her new life, playing and being silly like a normal kitten.
