There’s nothing more lonely than having a birthday party and no one to invite.
One little boy was turning 8 and had told his mother that he was sad because he didn’t have any friends, and no one would be coming to his birthday party.
His mom, however, refused to let that ruin his special day. So with a simple post to Facebook, she triggered an outpouring of love that she and her family could never have expected.
When Katherine Johnson realized how sad her son, Oliver, was at the idea of no one showing up for his birthday, she decided to see if she could find someone to bring a semi-truck to visit him.
Oliver’s fascination with trucks was no secret, as Katherine explained in her post, “Ollie knows every single name of every single truck and every single truck company. He gets the trucking magazine every month.”
All he wants to do is be a truck driver. He is just obsessed.”
With the hope of lifting her son’s spirits and making him smile on his special day, Katherine posted an offer of $50 to any truck driver willing to take Oliver for a ride around the block.
Barry Hart, the owner of Hart Haulage Trucking, caught wind of Katherine’s post and decided to take the idea to another level. Moved by Oliver’s story and the sense of loneliness he felt, Hart envisioned an extraordinary convoy for the young truck aficionado.
He put out a call on social media, expecting about 15 or 20 truck drivers to participate. To his astonishment, 64 truckers from different parts of New Zealand showed up, surpassing all expectations.
Hart said that after three years of “so much negativity”, from Covid-19 to extreme weather in the country, he thinks people just wanted something to make the world a bit brighter.
When it comes to kids, this community, these truckers will always come out,” he said.
The convoy, lovingly called “Ollie’s Convoy,” was set to be an unforgettable experience for the young truck enthusiast. The drivers gathered at a nearby fuel station before embarking on a 10-minute drive to Oliver’s home, where he was taken by surprise as the trucks arrived to celebrate his special day.
The convoy continued to the Hart Haulage truck yard, where the young boy had the opportunity to meet the kind-hearted truckers and revel in the camaraderie of the trucking community.
Oliver’s mom was overwhelmed by the response and the outpouring of generosity. Katherine mentioned that people from all over New Zealand sent presents, cakes, and food for the truck drivers. The story spread far and wide, with Oliver’s community rallying together to make his day unforgettable.
The convoy showcased the heartwarming side of the trucking industry, demonstrating the compassion and camaraderie among truckers. “It’s a young fella, and we wanted him to know there was a community around him,” Hart said.
Oliver’s father, Simon Johnson, expressed his gratitude, saying, “Today has meant more than we could have ever imagined. How one little post on Facebook can go to what has been achieved today is absolutely phenomenal, and ‘thank you’ just doesn’t cover what’s happened today.”
Hart made sure that the trucker’s kindness didn’t escape notice, either. “Every one of these (truckers) that are doing this, and there are probably ten trucks at least that are coming from Auckland, those guys, it will cost them $500-600 to get that truck down there, do their thing and go away, and not one of them is asking for anything,” he said.
In the end, Hart said there wasn’t any question that the truckers would do something for the young boy.
“I just saw that there was a kid who didn’t feel like he had friends and didn’t feel like he had a community around him,” Hart said.
“I wanted to make sure that, and I would like to hope that every kid knows, that there is a community and people out there that will back them and stand beside them.”
