I’m pretty sure I would be jumping off the plane if I saw this.
For passengers, it was a true “Snakes On A Plane” moment and they even had their very own star onboard to lend them a hand. A Virgin Airlines flight that was preparing to leave Broome, Australia, when passengers noticed an unexpected guest slithering along the aisle: a Stimson python.
Passengers spotted the wild snake, a Stimson’s python, right before takeoff. A passenger yelled for help – and another passenger rose to the occasion. After all, he had the experience needed to go after the snake. Andre Rerekura is known for his Disney+ series “Shipwreck Hunters Australia.” The show follows divers and archaeologists who search for and explore, exposing “shipwreck secrets”.
Rerekura said he knew he had to help. “They pretty much shut the whole plane down, and everyone was going to get disembarked and sent off the plane, which we weren’t that keen for because everyone wanted to go home,” Rerekura said. “It was a little bit of a weird story to think it was true, to hear that there was a snake on the plane, so I don’t think a lot of people believed it.”
The diver said that a woman seated behind him started screaming and he turned just in time to the snake slither past. Rerekura said he grabbed the ‘crazy cute’ python and carried it off the plane. “As soon as I saw it, I identified it pretty easily … so I knew it was safe [and] I knew it was just scared and super shy,” he said.
So, I just wanted to get (the snake) off real quick … it was super cute but some of the air hostesses were running the other way.”
The snake, while intimidating to see, is nonpoisonous and “inhabits the largest range of any other Australian python species,” the Australian Museum said. It is also a “popular species to be kept in captivity,” with its bites often being “food-related” rather than “aggressive.
“I think everyone was relieved that they didn’t have to get off the plane and then a lot of people were happy that the snake was safe,” Rerekura said. Even better was his reward. “The staff were awesome, they gave me a complimentary drink, I had a soda water.”
Viral video of the snake wrangling show Rerekura waving a fist in the air as passengers cheer. You can hear a flight attendant announce over the intercom that “there is never a dull moment in aviation.”
I think it’s safe to say Samuel L. Jackson would be proud.
