That’s not something you find every day.
A video has gone viral of a man was looking through the collection of cash he inherited from his grandmother. While that, in and of itself, is sweet – it’s what happened when he saw an unusual looking $5 bill.
On it, the grandson, Tommy, and his girlfriend Charlotte Carroll, realized they had something unique. On the video, they show the banknote from 1988. It features a misprint on the front, at the bottom right corner. The ink is misaligned and would typically appear on the back side of the bill.
When you flip it over, the bottom left has a blank area that stretches into the middle of the bill, missing all the normal printed information. Intrigued, Charlotte posted the video on TikTok where it has nearly 900,000 views.
It has to be the most insane banknote I have ever seen.”
Almost instantly, the couple said, request to buy the bill from the couple has poured in. “We have had people offer between $5 and $400,000 for it, and … we refuse,” Charlotte said. The couple had hoped collectors would find the bill interesting, but it was important for them to keep it.
A coin shop in Florida said that “currency errors” like the couple’s $5 ones most collectors seek out. One similar bill listed for $1,249, while another was going for $1,800. “They’re perfectly legal to own and have become an amazing part of the paper collecting hobby!” the company said.
Paper money expert Wyatt McDonald said misprints are usually not found on modern bills, but when you find them on older bills, it’s a lucky thing when you get one. “Misprints on older currency can be very valuable, and the color of the seal is typically the best indicator. Vintage notes will have a red, blue, or gold seal on the front,” he said.
For Tommy and Charlotte, the bill itself is more valuable due to its sentimentality of it, and they said you can’t put a price on that. After all, Tommy’s grandmother had loved it enough to hold onto it for her grandson to have one day.
“It is our most favorite, and priceless, piece out of anything in our collection,” Charlotte said. Sometimes, holding onto something like that keeps the memory of the person you lose closer to you – and money can’t buy anything like that.
