Once upon a time, a young woman dreamt of making dresses for others.
She went to school and drew constantly. But then one day, like in any fairytale, she had to make a choice – finish school or focus on family. And as so many young women did during the 1940s, she chose family.
But more than 80 years later, her choice of family led to her dreams being realized, all thanks to her loving granddaughter. And just like in a true fairytale, her designs have become known across the country.
TikToker Julia, who chose to not share her last name for safety, has always had a close relationship with her grandmother, Georgie. One day, the 27-year-old was looking through her grandmother’s memorabilia and stumbled upon designs that Georgie had drawn when she was a young student in fashion school.
“I knew grandma was talented, but I was like, wow, these are really much better than what I was envisioning in my head. And she mentioned that when she dies, she wanted them to get sent out to magazines or displayed at her funeral,” she said.
But,” Julia added, “I just kind of thought, why wait until she’s dead?”
So Julia set out to learn how to turn her grandma’s designs into actual clothing. She told Inside Edition that she found YouTube videos to teach herself how to sew. Then she combined fabric from her grandmother’s collection and gave herself a budget of $300 per design. Once the first design was complete, she made a video showing Georgie the first dress she had completed.
The video has since received more than 3 million views and turned Georgie into a viral sensation.

When Georgie saw the dress on Julia, she couldn’t contain her joy. “That is absolutely stunning. And I thank you because that’s just lovely and it feels so nice to see something that I drew so many, many years ago,” Georgie said in the video.
“It’s a beautiful bonding experience between us that has made grandma happy,” she said. The Chicago resident has continued to make more of her grandma’s sketches into dresses, putting her own spin on the design.
Julia said that she hopes to help people realize that “the older generation is so similar to us in many ways. They all had dreams and hopes that weren’t all that different from ours.”
And more than just getting the designs noticed, Julia said it’s her grandmother’s happiness that pushes her to make the dresses. “Her reaction always makes me feel so blessed I get to share this experience with her,” she said.
@_boringbb_ This is the 4th grandma design I’ve created. It was by far my hardest project I’ve ever done. I’ll be posting more videos about this dress throughout the week, but this is grandmas reaction to seeing her work come to life. #grandmareacts #suprise #fashiondesign ♬ original sound – Julia
