Being pregnant can be a time of great joy. Parents just want their baby to be born healthy, no matter if it’s a boy or a girl.
Usually that is. For one family in Michigan, however, they have always wanted a baby girl to be born. The reason – it had been 138 years since a girl was born into the family. There had been only boys.
Surprise doesn’t begin to cover it, when Carolyn Clark was told by her then-boyfriend Andrew, that there had been no baby girls born in his family since 1885.
“What do you mean?'” she said she asked Andrew, pointing out that “it’s a 50-50 chance” with each baby born.
He goes, ‘No, legitimately, we have not had a girl in our direct line in over 100 years.”
Andrew’s parents backed their son’s claim up, Carolyn told Good Morning America. “They’re like, ‘Oh yeah, no, we haven’t had a girl in our direct line.’ He’s had uncles and cousins that have had girls but in his lineage, there has not been a girl.”
The pair have a son, 4-year-old Cameron. But, Carolyn told WZZM13 that they soon began trying for a second child, both hoping for a girl this time.
After suffering two miscarriages, they finally found out Carolyn was pregnant once more. “We honestly didn’t care if we were having a boy or girl at that point,” she told Good Morning America. “We just were thankful to be pregnant and just praying for a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby.”
At a party for friends and family, the couple invited their guests to join them in finding out the gender of the baby. They used cookies that had been baked with either blue or pink icing. The Clarks themselves didn’t know the gender, either.
“We kept it a secret to ourselves as well,” Andrew said. “So I just assumed it was going to be blue in the center of the cookies.”
But, the family was in for a shock of a century – the inside of the cookies were pink.
“Everyone was just screaming and jumping in in disbelief,” Carolyn said. “We just were thankful to be pregnant and just praying for a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby,” she said.
It was just icing on the cake that it was a girl.”
Andrew told WZZM13 that it was “really hard to come up with a name (because) we’ve never thought of a girl name before.”
“I think every ultrasound she was like, ‘double check that it’s a girl. I don’t believe in it,’” he said.
“(Audrey) was definitely worth the wait. She was born on St Patty’s Day, March 17, 2023. She is our lucky charm! Her big brother Cameron is so in love with her and he is doing a great job as a big brother,” Carolyn told reporters for the Independent.
“We’re so happy that she’s finally here and once again, that she’s healthy and that everything went well with the delivery,” she said.
