Not every explorer searches for bones. Some search for abandoned buildings. They wander and find their way into places normally forgotten and breathe new life into the stories people have left behind. While this can lead to amazing discoveries, sometimes it can fill you with sadness for what was discarded and all the reasons why.
YouTuber Jeremy Abbott who goes by JeremyXplores, recently stumbled upon an abandoned mansion on Google that left him and his viewers emotional. The 27,0000-square-foot home sat on an unkempt property, when Jeremy found it. The mansion, worth nearly $13 million, has 10 bedrooms and 11 bathrooms. It was undergoing construction when the owner, a local surgeon, died in a plane crash along with his 15-year-old son, Abbott said.
The man’s wife and three other children weren’t to keep up with the $61,828 monthly mortgage, and the home was taken by the bank, he said. Abbott won’t say where he found the mansion so he can keep the family’s name private. He and a friend spent more than 11 hours exploring the house.
Abbott said the mansion was never finished after the tragedy. “But the mystery of this mansion lies in the huge amount of valuables left inside including luxury cars, lavish furniture, expensive designer clothes and so much more,” he added.
Abbott found a visitors’ quarter, an indoor pool, an outdoor sports complex, a four-car garage with cars still inside, a mahogany library and an elevator. He found items ranging from a collection of shoes that include brands like Nike Air Max and Chanel in dust-covered boxes, to clothes with tags still on them. Inside the garage were luxury cars.
“The strangest things I found inside weren’t the luxury cars, the lush furniture, or even the flat-screen TVs,” Abbott said. “What I found so strange to be inside were the small items, like the designer clothes with the tags still on, or the Dior shoes in the closet, or perhaps the jewelry and mounds of expensive makeup in the bathroom.”
Abbott went on, “It makes no sense to me why these things were left behind, as they could have easily been packed up and transported out of the home whenever the family left.” For Abbott and his more than 86,000 YouTube subscribers, the normally exciting experience led to sadness and “reverence for the family who had lived there and watched their dreams come crashing down along with the plane that killed their father and his son.”
“People generally have the same reaction as I did when I first discovered this mega-mansion — they respond in absolute amazement and at the same time, sadness for the family and the home that has begun to be consumed by nature.” Watch Abbott’s exploration of the mansion below.
