Crosby, a 7-year-old golden retriever, may have bitten off more than he could chew during a strenuous hike in New Hampshire’s White Mountains. But thanks to some quick-thinking hikers and a dedicated rescue team, this “ruff” day turned into a tale of triumph!
On a nice day recently, Crosby and his owner, along with a second dog, set out on the challenging Franconia Ridge Loop. The nearly nine-mile trail is known for its steep climbs and rocky terrain, making it a popular spot for experienced adventurers. Unfortunately, Crosby’s paws had a little too much adventure, leaving the 110-pound retriever exhausted and in need of help halfway through the trek.
“Crosby’s owner noticed him slowing down and taking longer breaks approximately five miles into the almost nine-mile hike,” wrote NH Paw Rescue, a group of volunteers who assist with dog rescues in the New Hampshire mountains. They shared Crosby’s story on their Facebook page, along with photos of his rescue.
After a short break at the Appalachian Mountain Club’s Greenleaf Hut, the group pressed on. But a mile later, Crosby had reached his limit. Suffering from exhaustion and soft-tissue injuries on his paw pads, the pup simply couldn’t take another step. Lacking the necessary supplies for an emergency, Crosby’s owner called for assistance.
Help wasn’t far off. NH Paw Rescue was notified around 3:30 p.m., and by 5 p.m., their rescue team was on the trail. In the meantime, passing hikers came to the rescue by helping carry Crosby partway down the path.
By 6:30 p.m., the volunteer team arrived at Crosby’s location. “The full NH Paw Rescue team arrived at Crosby’s location, loaded him in a rigid litter, and carried him down to the trailhead,” they shared. Within 45 minutes, Crosby was safely down the mountain.
Once at the bottom, rescuers bandaged Crosby’s paws and covered them with protective booties. The golden retriever, despite his tough day, was ready to go home for a well-deserved nap.
He jumped into his owner’s vehicle to rest and head home,” NH Paw Rescue wrote.
Crosby’s owner planned to take him for veterinary care following the adventure, but thanks to the quick response and care from the rescue team, the pup was in good shape. NH Paw Rescue also used the opportunity to remind hikers to be cautious when bringing pets along on challenging hikes.
“The Franconia Ridge Loop is a difficult almost nine-mile hike… and has very rocky footing,” they explained, noting the importance of bringing extra gear for canine companions. Thanks to the kindness of strangers and a team of dedicated volunteers, Crosby made it through his “ruff” day and will surely be back on his feet in no time – just maybe with some new booties for his next adventure!
