A simple device can lead to the most amazing miracles. Sometimes we get lucky enough that it’s all caught on video, too, In a truly touching scene from Greenville, S.C., Teyana Skye Gladden, a two-year-old born with a hearing disability, experienced the joy of hearing her own voice for the first time.
But the young girl Teyana was fitted with a bone anchor hearing device at Anderson-Oconee Speech & Hearing Services, marking the beginning of a new chapter in her life. Teyana’s journey to this moment was filled with challenges. Born deaf in one ear and with Microtia—a severe deformity—in the other, she had only been able to hear muffled sounds up until now.
Her condition was complicated further by Tetralogy of Fallot, a rare congenital heart disease she was diagnosed with at birth, which added more layers of medical challenges to her young life. The moment Teyana spoke softly for the first time was captured by her mother, Olga Arnold, who couldn’t hold back her tears. In an act of pure innocence and love, Teyana turned to her weeping mother and comforted her with her newly discovered voice, saying, ‘It’s OK mama!’
This tear-jerking interaction has since captured the hearts of people around the globe as the video went viral. Olga Arnold, a plus-size model and hospital receptionist, described the experience as a ‘miracle’. Speaking to DailyMail.com, she shared how Teyana is adjusting to the new hearing aid and discovering the joys of music. “She likes it because it’s a headband, which she wore for so long. She is talking a lot lower now and she’s starting to understand sound,” Arnold said.
If we’re in the car with music on, she’s starting to move to the beat because she can hear it properly for the first time. It’s really sweet.”
Teyana’s health journey has been a source of strength for her family, according to her mother. Despite the numerous hospital visits and medical challenges, Teyana’s spirit remains unbroken. “Teyana gives me strength, she gives us all strength. She is a feisty little two-year-old!” Arnold expressed.
The community’s response to Teyana’s story has been overwhelmingly positive, with a GoFundMe page set up for her care seeing a significant increase in donations following the viral video. The funds will support Teyana’s ongoing medical expenses, including her next open heart surgery scheduled just after her third birthday.
Teyana’s story is not just about the challenges of living with a hearing impairment and a congenital heart disease; it’s a story of resilience, family love, and the small victories that mean the world. As Teyana continues to navigate her health journey with her family by her side, her story is a reminder that we can find joy and happiness in even the darkest of places.
