When planning for the birth of your child, often the idea is to have the baby in the hospital. Doctors, nurses, a bed, ice – all the normal things to accompany the delivery. What you don’t plan for is to have that baby inside your car, more than an hour away from the hospital. And for the father-to-be to lose his wedding ring in the process.
But that was all in a day’s work for Rebecca and Danya Mahota of Cape Cod, Mass. But this unbelievable drive to the hospital turned into a double miracle, starting with the birth of their brand-new daughter, Summer. The couple, already parents of one daughter, were heading to the hospital for the birth of their second. What should have been a simple drive became a roadside adventure.
“We got in the car, the GPS said 56 minutes … and that was the problem. That was the problem,” Rebecca said. At 40 weeks, she was ready to have the baby and as her husband pulled the car over, the baby girl was making her arrival.
“He had pulled over to the side of the road, I was already holding her head,” Rebecca said. Danya couldn’t believe what had happened, he said.
Boy, we made it 26 minutes into that 56-minute trip. My wife is an absolute legend.”
They called 911 and once they were taken to the hospital by the first responders, Danya noticed his wedding ring, which had been on his hand when he was driving, was now missing. The couple, once they were home, searched their house and their car for the ring, but couldn’t find it.
But luck was again on their side. A few days later, Danya and some friends went back to the stretch of highway where Summer was born and began looking for the ring. “Just as we were about to leave, I looked down, and by the grace of God, I found it right between my toes. I was scraping some grass away, and I just couldn’t believe it,” he said.
The couple said they still can’t believe that despite how everything seemed to be against them that day, the miracle was that it all turned out just the way it should have been. “Everything could have gone wrong, and everything went right,” Danya said. “It was actually private and special, although not at all the plan, but it worked out beautifully,” Rebecca said.
