Sometimes it really is the kids who will save the world.
For one seventh-grader in Michigan, he rose without hesitation when someone needed his help. The world needs more people like him.
Dillon Reeves, a seventh grader from Michigan, was honored for his quick thinking and bravery during an incident where a school bus driver lost consciousness while driving with 65 children on board.
Reeves noticed that the driver was in distress and stepped forward to help bring the bus to a stop. Video of the incident show the driver radioing for help before passing out, with Reeves pushing his way to the front of the bus to put his foot on the brake and to tell other students to call 911.
School officials and first responders from the Warren police and fire departments praised Reeves for stopping the 15,000-pound bus and safely moving the students to another bus to complete their journey home.
Lois E. Carter Middle School Superintendent Robert Livernois spoke highly of Reeves’ courage and swift thinking under immense pressure.
What he did will grow in intensity over time. Cool, calm, quick thinking under pressure,” Livernois said.
The school district shared a statement on Facebook that detailed Reeves saving the day, leading to widespread recognition of his brave act. After presenting the young man with an award for his bravery, Livernois said, “To Dillon Reeves, in recognition of your quick thinking and bravery.”
In an interview with local news outlet WXYZ, Reeves said that he wasn’t expecting anything in return, but his father, Steve Reeves, expressed his gratitude for the recognition of his son’s bravery. “This is so good for him. He needs to be recognized for that. We need more care in the world and to take care of people. I’m sure there is more to come,” he said.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to support the driver, who is currently recovering at home. The funds raised on the page will help to cover the costs of mortgage, groceries, and other necessities while she recovers.
Reeves’ heroic act has drawn widespread praise, with many commending him for his quick thinking and bravery. The incident has also made an impact on Reeves’ aspirations for the future.
I want to be a firefighter or a cop,” Reeves said.
The incident is a reminder of the importance of quick thinking and the impact that one person can have on the lives of others. Despite the difficult circumstances, Reeves was able to take charge and prevent a serious accident from happening. His bravery and heroism are an inspiration to all, reminding us that in the face of adversity, we have the power to act and make a difference. His actions will hopefully continue to inspire and remind us of the power of kindness and bravery in the face of adversity.
