Every woman dreams of walking toward their chosen person on their wedding day. Your father giving you away, the love of your life watching you.
But sometimes the reality of what a dream looks like changes as you grow up and life throws its many curveballs towards you.
So when Chelsie Hill’s wedding was approaching, she knew that it would require extra planning and secrecy to make her way to her groom, Jay Bloomfied, 34, on their wedding day.
Because Hill, 29, is paralyzed from the waist down and uses a wheelchair. But that day she was determined to walk toward her new life on both legs.
As soon as I saw Jay, his jaw dropped,” Hill told Insider.
She had him turn around as she made her entrance, with her father by her side. “He was just in shock that I was walking because he had no idea,” she added.
Hill used leg braces and a walker that was decked out in wedding garland. She had her dress custom made, to make the switch from the chair to standing easier on her, she said.
“I want to stress that there’s nothing wrong with sitting down in your chair,” Hill, who was paralyzed in a car accident when she was 17. “But for me growing up, I always imagined myself walking down the aisle,” she said.
Hill spoke about how much this meant to her during her wedding vows.
“My whole life I had imagined standing eye to eye with my husband on my wedding day. After my accident, I wasn’t sure if I would ever find someone who truly loved all of me,” she said.
“You have accepted me fully, honored me and adored all the parts of me. For this moment today, I wanted to do something I had always dreamed of,” she added. “Stand eye to eye with you as we promise our lives to each other.
Hill was also standing while the couple shared their first dance.
But she didn’t stop there – she and her dad At the reception, she and her dad wowed the crowd with an epic father-daughter dance.
Then, her father opened his to show off his custom “Father of da bride” shirt, before launching into a spirited dance routine set to a medley of hits, including “U Can’t Touch This” by MC Hammer.
Reflecting on their special day, Hill shared that she couldn’t have been happier with how everything turned out.
“Such a magical weekend,” she said. “To say it was a dream is an understatement.”
