We’re told neither rain nor snow won’t keep the postman away.
Apparently that also applies to doctors in Iowa. Especially ones with their own ATV.
After a winter snowstorm blew in,
A doctor in Iowa had the perfect way of getting to the hospital to deliver a baby after a blizzard blew in. The state had been dealing with severe winter weather, like much of the United States.
But snow didn’t stop Krystal Gardner from going into labor Jan. 12th. Krystal was having a scheduled c-section, but sudden complications required her to have the procedure immediately.
“I knew that it just needed to be done,” said her husband, Craig.
That I’d do whatever it’d take to get her up to the hospital…”
The couple arrived at the Shenandoah Medical Center, anxious if there would be any other staff who would also be there in spite of the snow.
“It was just anxiety until we got here and started seeing everybody come in,” Krystal said.
For Dr. Chase Brown, it wasn’t a question of if he would be there – just a matter of how.
“We knew he was going to get there,” she said, adding that she also knew all the other staff who were present for Birkley’s birth “would get there for it” too.
According to the outlet, this is the third delivery Dr. Brown has traveled to on his ATV.
“Snow went everywhere, went flying in all directions,” Brown said. He hit snow drifts while driving the ATV at 20mph, he said. “Just keep going through to the next one.”
The doctor said that when he started working in the area, he bought the ATV, “Floods, rain, storms. Sure better than taking a horse into town, right?” he quipped.
Brown arrived just in time to help deliver the healthy baby girl, who the parents named Birkley.
The hospital cheered on their doctor in a Facebook post.
“We had a baby being delivered this morning at 8am in the middle of a snowstorm. How did Dr. Chase Brown get here for this delivery!?!?! An ATV, of course,” the hospital posted.
“Thank you for the dedication to our patients, Dr. Brown! (And a pretty fun story for the proud new parents to share for years!!!),” the hospital said.
Birkley, Brown said, had already been in for her first check-up and was “as healthy as can be.”
“She’s a very good baby,” her mom said.
We couldn’t have asked for more perfection.”
Brown said he’s used the ATV at least two other times to make it to a birth.
“Again, no matter what’s coming, we’re there to take care of people,” he said.
For Brown, it’s just what he’s always wanted.
“This has been my dream,” he said. “This is a dream come true for me, to be here in a small town and provide the care we can, and experiences like this is just how I imagined I’d be a doctor one day.”
