Bachelor Party Canoe Trip Takes A Bizarre Turn – They See A Head Poking Out Of The Mud…

Everyone expects a bachelor party to involve some sort of surprise. I mean, that is the very nature of most of those events.

So when Mitch White and his group of friends decided to spend White’s bachelor party canoeing on the Minnesota River, they expected rapid waters and maybe a chance or two of tipping over into the river.

They never, however, expected they’d stumble upon a head in the mud.

But that’s exactly what they found after White’s nephew heard a barking from behind him, as he paddled ahead of White.

“We had been on the river for … a full day and night, and hadn’t seen anyone else,” White wrote on Facebook. “My [n]ephew … heard a dog barking behind him and turned the canoe around to see what was going on …”

And there, on the muddy banks of the river, was a head poking out of the mud. It belonged to an elderly St. Bernard who had somehow gotten himself stuck with no way of escape.

When we got to shore, [we saw he] was buried up to his neck in the thickest of mud,” White wrote.

He told reporters, while laughing, that the men “…were trying to figure out what to do, like what do we do? And I was like, ‘My fiancée, Kelly, probably won’t marry me if we don’t get this dog out of here!'”

So, jumping into action, the men began to work. “The rest of us began shoveling the dog out of the mud using our paddles, uncovering 1 leg at a time and revealing his body, which looked SUPER SKINNY,” White wrote.
The men said that after about 30 minutes of digging, they tried to get the dog to move. “(We began” calling out his name that we gave him -WILSON- and by throwing the lunch meat a few feet away from him – but poor “Wilson” could not move his legs,” White said.

One of the men called 9-1-1 and explained they had a dog stuck in the mud. When the Carver County Fire Dept. Captain Shaun Cox and other emergency responders arrived, they brought out a harness to help pull the dog out. The men aided the responders in getting the harness around the dog’s chest.
White wrote, “So them and 2 of our guys were able to drag Wilson out, finally getting out of the mud pit. About 5 minutes later, the owner of the pup showed up and said ‘Ed! What are you doing down there in the mud!?!?!’ – we were calling him by the wrong name.”

Cox was similarly thrilled that this unique rescue had come to such a joyful conclusion and that Ed would finally be home safe.

I was happy to see them reunited,” Cox said. “[Ed] looked a lot better the next day, after having had a bath.”

George Niskanen, Ed’s owner, said the dog had been missing for just a day.

“He likes to roam from time to time,” Niskanen said. “He usually comes back.”

After getting a call from the sheriff’s department, Niskanen said he rushed down to get his dog.

“He was in a heck of a predicament down there,” Niskanen said. “We got him up the hill and now he’s brought back to strength, thanks to the Carver County Sheriff’s Department and the Carver Fire Department as well.”

He believes the people from the bachelor party are heroes, too.  “I’d like to know their names so I could send a card of thanks,” Niskanen said.

As for Ed, the senior dog is slowly gaining his strength back and eating and drinking just fine.
