Aw, Crap! Family’s $4,000 Goes Missing – But Then They Learn The Dirty Truth About The Thief

Well, sometimes finding your stolen money is a dirty job.

But someone has to do it.

And unfortunately for one Pennsylvania couple, to get back their ‘stolen’ $4,000, they were going to have to do a lot of crappy things to get their money back.

Especially since their 7-year-old Goldendoodle, Cecil, had eaten the entire stack of cash.

“This is Cecil. He has never done anything bad in his life,” Carrie Law wrote on a video posted to Instagram.

But, Carrie and her husband, Clayton, learned that an envelope full of $50 and $100 bills was just too much for the pup to ignore.

The pair had just withdrawn the money from their savings account to pay a contractor who was installing a fence at their home. They hadn’t been home for long, when Carrie said all of a sudden she heard Clayton.

He was shouting, ‘Cecil ate $4,000!’” she said.

“I ran in, thinking I had to have heard him wrong, but when I saw the mess, there was no doubt,” Carrie said. “I thought I was going to have a heart attack. Cecil had really done it.”

They couldn’t believe it. Afterall, they said, Cecil had never even tried taking food off the counter, before.

“Cecil’s a goofy guy and he’s very particular — you could leave a steak on the table, and he wouldn’t touch it because he’s not food motivated,” Carrie said. “But apparently he is money motivated.”

The couple were stunned.

“He has never really done anything bad before, so we were more shocked than angry,” Clayton said. “We couldn’t believe it. We looked at each other and said, ‘What are we going to do?’”

As Cecil slept off his expensive meal, the couple called their vet. Thankfully for the dog, he’d likely suffer no ill effects from his fancy snack. Unfortunately for the couple, though, if they wanted to salvage any of their money, they were going to have to get their hands dirty.

After learning that the bank would take any bills back if they were taped together and the serial numbers were visible on both the front and back, they began working to gather the pieces up.

Luckily, they were able to scrape roughly $1,500 in torn bills from the kitchen floor.

Cecil was sitting on the sofa full of $2,500, and we knew there was only one way to get that money back,” Carrie said.

The pup was kind enough, they said, to cough up (quite literally) $250 later that evening. However, poor Clayton had to spend the night and next day following Cecil around the backyard. Using a mask and gloves, he collected his dog’s deposits, and took them inside.

Clayton and Carrie sifted through the piles, pulling all the scraps of money out and then washing the pieces before taping them back together.

“I never thought I’d be able to say I’ve laundered money, but there is apparently a first time for everything,” Carrie said.

After two days, they found roughly $1,800, bringing their total to $3,550.

Carrie said that she plans to use the rest of the scraps to make “the most expensive piece of art” and a reminder of their ‘adventure’.

As for Cecil, the couple still love their silly dog.

“We couldn’t be mad at him — he’s a very lovable dog,” Carrie said.
