Movies transport us from our lives for a few hours. It lets us experience magic with some of our favorite stars.
But what happens when movies become more than just a solitary event? Well, one lucky crowd recently got to find out. In London’s Prince Charles Theatre, an audience was getting a chance to view a film from 1999.
The film stars Brendan Fraser, who recently won a Critics Choice Award for his performance in “The Whale.” The actor has been a rising star recently, with a comeback that few have seen recently.
Fraser, who was taking a break from campaigning for his Oscar nomination for that same film, decided to pop into the theater when he heard they were showing a double feature of “The Mummy” and “The Mummy Returns.”
But Fraser, known for his sense of humor, showed up dressed as his character, Rick O’Connell, from the movie franchise to give viewers a night they won’t ever forget.
When an employee announced their special guest, Fraser took the stage to a standing ovation.
“Thank you, Friday night in Leicester Square. I first started seeing films right across the street. I saw Star Wars in 1977 and it changed my life, made me want to star in movies,” he said, while dressed in the character’s typical tan trousers, brown leather jacket and cream neck scarf.
“I am proud to stand before you tonight,” Fraser said.
This is a film that was made in Britain. You should know that! Even the second one, too. Be proud. Thank you for being here.”
“We had no idea what kind of movie we were making when we shot this. We didn’t know if it was a drama, a comedy, a horror movie, straight action, all of the above. No idea, until it tested in front of British audiences, thank you for that,” Fraser
Fraser went on to talk about the plot, and then told them, “I won’t take anymore of your time, enjoy your night and if you get a chance, check out “The Whale.”
Fraser famously starred alongside Rachel Weisz in 1999’s “The Mummy,” 2001’s “The Mummy Returns” and 2008’s “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.”
His role in “The Mummy trilogy”, which ran until 2008, catapulted the actor to worldwide fame.
And Fraser is certainly dominating Hollywood for his recent role in the drama “The Whale,” where he plays an obese and reclusive teacher trying to make peace with his daughter.
Fraser told Variety Magazine that although he does not know any details about a “Mummy” reboot, he is not against returning.
“It’s kind of an open-ended question for some time now. I’m not opposed to it, I don’t know an actor who doesn’t want a job. I don’t think I’ve been this famous and unsalaried at the same time in my professional life so sign me up!”
When he parted with the London crowd, he paused and told them, “’Thank you, goodnight and keep your powder clean!, which many fans have guessed that the actor meant “Keep your powder dry.”
It’s an apt saying for this actor who has seen his shares of falls and rises. It means to remain calm, and be ready for problems to arise in the future.
