A Tiny ‘Terror’ Was Stuck Under A Bridge – As Rescuers Got Closer, It Suddenly Lunged

Well, not everyone wants to be rescued.

That’s what a few members of a Texas fire department found out when they were called out to a pedestrian bridge recently, to rescue an animal who quite clearly had decided she was perfectly fine where she was. Even if that place was being stranded in the middle of a bayou.

The feisty chihuahua was spotted by visitors to the Houston Botanic Garden. The tiny ‘terror’ was stuck on a concrete beam of the bridge over the Sims Bayou. Garden staff were noticed and then called for help. Houston Fire Department stations sent rescuers out to the garden to try and bring the pup in safely.

Video showed a firefighter making his way out to the defiant dog, who is now going by the name, Burbie. Burbie was clearly resistant to the rescuer, moving away as he swam toward her. Then, in a somewhat ungrateful manner, the chihuahua bit the rescuer on the hand.

But the grinning rescuer kept trying and the fed-up Burbie quickly threw caution to the wind and jumped in the water in an attempt to get away. The rescuer quickly snagged the soggy pup and managed to bring her in safely.  “We love knowing that everyone and everything in and around the Garden is in good hands with these trained community helpers on the job,” Houston Botanic Garden wrote in a Facebook post.

Photos shared in the post show a beaming firefighter with a not-quite-as-happy Burbie snuggly wrapped in a towel. A vet tech, Judy Hausler, was able to come and pick up Burbie and had plans to keep her until her family was found.

She started standing up and barking, like yapping, more yap than bark, really, it was kind of cute.”

Thankfully, Hausler was able to located the dog’s family quickly and returned Burbie to them the next day. She said the family’s reunion with their dog was emotional and they “were all crying.” The owners said the dog had been missing for more than a week and had escaped without a collar. They plan to have Burbie microchipped to avoid her being lost again.

“We are very grateful for the efforts of the first responders and of everyone involved to help us bring our baby home,” on of Burbie’s owners said. “I don’t think that there’s anything that we could possibly do to repay the efforts of those involved, but I will say that I am very grateful.”
