We all have that one person who know matter how bad we are feeling, just makes the world right again.
Sometimes that is a person in our day-to-day lives, but sometimes it’s someone you’ve never met, but have watched as you grew up, in movies and TV shows.
That can sometimes be even more powerful. And just once in a while, you might have a chance to meet that star. Drew Barrymore proved that she is just as lovely as we all think.
But for fan Olivia Radford, 21, who recently moved to Los Angeles from Salt Lake City, Utah, it meant even more than it might have for most.
Drew was hosting The Drew Barrymore Show in front of a studio audience. In a clip that has now gone viral, she pauses after noticing someone in the crowd crying.
The actress jumps up and storms toward the stage. “Are you okay? Did anything happen?” Barrymore asks quickly, before walking toward the woman, joking, “Whose ass do I have to kick?” The guest’s friend tells Drew, “She loves you so much.”
Oh God, thank God it’s nothing bad! Did you see me coming up here like, ‘Tell me where they are! Because I will take them down. Who made you cry?!'”
The actress, who has starred in movies such as “50 First Dates” and “Charlie’s Angels,” walked up to the crying woman, who simply stated, “You’re just my childhood idol,” to which Drew responded in typical fashion by hugging her and then sitting on her knees to give her a bigger hug, while helping her calm down.
One person very wisely commented, “I feel like Drew sitting on my lap would permanently rewire my brain and cure my lifelong existential angst and insomnia and anxiety.”
“I don’t know why I have the urge to do this,” the actress said laughing.
“I really love you, I’m sorry,” Olivia said, drying her eyes. One of the crew members gave the crying fan a mic and Olivia told Drew, “You’re just, like, my childhood idol. I don’t want to be that person to cry.” Laughing, Barrymore responded, “Be that person!”
Drew assured that crying was ok and said “And it’s so funny that you would say, ‘I don’t want to cry here.’ I cry here all the time,”
Radford feels a kinship with Barrymore that goes even deeper than her films.
“Like myself, Drew has had a super hard life,” Radford said to Upworthy.
Drew is an extremely loving person, despite all the hardships she’s had to overcome. At the taping, she told me that there was a reason we met and that she sees herself in me, which felt super special.”
The actress has often been asked about her policy of being close and personal with guests on her talk show. Recently while she was on “The Tonight Show,” host Jimmy Fallon asked her about why she does that.
“I feel this magnetic pull,” Drew said. “I love doing the show so much. I get to learn from people every day. I get to have these incredible conversations that I definitely take something away. It’s always improving my life, it’s profound, it’s fun.”
But even more than that, “I love people. I love every human being on the planet,” she added. “I’m fascinated and everyone has a story and every person is exceptional and interesting. And it is so fun to literally get to be a conversationalist at work. It’s the coolest thing in the world.”
