Who knew the best dating advice you could receive was from a 5-year-old?
Thanks to Instagram and TikTok, one kindergartener is going viral for her basic guide to dating when you find a boy you like. And honestly, it’s something we all could use. Stephanie’s daughter, 5-year-old Harper Rae, recently came home from school with some tea to spill, along with some life advice we should really all listen to.
A mom is sharing her daughter’s hilarious take on the kindergarten dating scene. It all started because she caught a couple kissing on the bus. “Her boyfriend kisses her on the lips… on the bus!” she whispers in the video.
Clearly upset that these little kids did not know the proper protocol for kissing. “The only time you can kiss somebody is when you actually love them and they’re a part of your family,” Harper said. “Like when you get in love with somebody, when you’re actually in love with somebody, you can kiss,” she said. When mom asks at what age that might happen, Harper tells her, “Like when you’re in the teens.”
Then came her No. 1 Rule: “If you can’t spell boyfriend, you shouldn’t have one, right?” Honestly this should be the basis to all new relationships. For Harper, this is the typical way she takes on the world – full of laughter and honest advice.
Stephanie said that Harper’s big personality has always been a part of the child. “She was putting sentences together at 20 months old. I really noticed it when we were home together during the pandemic. We got a little bit more time together than usual and it ended up being such a good time and a great age for her vocabulary,” Stephanie said.
That’s when it really started to explode. Ever since she could put words together, her favorite thing to do was [tell stories] and use her imagination.”
Kindergarten life, her mom said, has been the catalyst for a more expressive side of Harper. “Kindergarten is obviously like a pivotal stage, mixing with lots of different people. She was starting to see for the first time that her peers were referring to crushes as a boyfriend and girlfriend. She has always been like such an old soul and it’s beyond her,” Stephanie said
Stephanie said she never expected the videos on social media would be watched by anyone other than her family. After all, she said, that was the whole reason she began the account, to keep family updated.
But once the videos began getting more and more attention. Stephanie said she began to see how this could help others. “My favorite part of it has been getting the messages from people who are struggling with depression or who are chronically ill or who have just lost somebody, basically just at a low point in life, and they find happiness in and enjoy Harper,” she said
(People) look forward to her videos and finding a reason to smile.”
Stephanie plans to keep explaining to Harper just how important her videos are, and how they are helping other people to feel happier. “She’s very wise beyond her years. She obviously is only going to understand to a certain extent, but she does know we get recognized in a lot of places,” she said.

“I don’t think we’ve gone anywhere in the past year or two without somebody coming up and saying something to her, she said. “It’s been very kind and friendly, but she’s definitely understanding that people recognize her from her Instagram.”
While this a something they love to do, Stephanie said that Harper will always have a say on if she makes videos or not. “I’ve had conversations with her about how anytime she wants to stop, we stop. This can be gone anytime she wants,” Stephanie said. “We do it as safely as we possibly can. Right now, she loves making the videos and she loves making people smile.”
