Well, that was a tall order!
When Luke Derbshire told his friends he was wanting to start a mobile coffee business, he was thinking something small. After all, it was his first attempt at something like this. Enter Maddy, Toby and Josh, a trio of siblings who go by “Professional Idiots” on TikTok.
The three told their friend they knew just what to do. And the ‘Idiots’ brewed up the most amazing surprise as well as millions of views. “Luke is just such a talented guy,” Toby said. “When he told us he wanted to start his own business and run a coffee cart, we knew we could do something to help.”
Instead of a modest coffee cart, the group decided to think bigger — literally. They purchased a 17-year-old double-decker bus and embarked on an ambitious transformation, pouring more than $31,800 and countless hours into the project. The end result? The “Moving Mug,” a coffee shop on wheels.
The process started with clearing out the old bus, removing chairs, and patching up leaks — there was even a hole in the roof. The team spent months sanding, painting, and adding custom touches. They replaced faulty electrics with LED strips, covered the roof in solar panels, and installed cozy wood paneling on the ceiling. The finishing touch was sleek Pukka flooring, tying the whole design together.
But the Professional Idiots didn’t stop at aesthetics. They ensured the bus was practical too, installing a working kitchen, a sink and seating for customers. They even retained quirky original features, like using the wheel arch as a cake stand and repurposing old bell poles for tables.
All the seats had to be replaced, the floors all came up, all the electrics were faulty — it kept leaking,” Maddy said.
But all that hard work paid off. The bus now sits in a car park by a pub in Tunbridge Wells a small town in Kent, England. It’s ready to serve up coffee and smiles. Better yet, it’s still driveable, which lets Luke to take the café to events.
“I just can’t believe it,” Luke said. “I suggested a horse box or something, so I could have a coffee cart. Now I have a full-on double-decker bus with seating and everything. It’s just incredible.”
The trio documented the entire renovation process on TikTok, inspiring millions with their creativity and dedication. And their journey doesn’t end here — the Professional Idiots are already planning their next big project: transforming a shipping container into a starter home.
But for now, the Moving Mug stands as a remind of friendship, ingenuity, and just how far a little caffeine-fueled determination can go.
