When a life is in danger, it’s the men in blue that we often rely on to save the day.
Too often they don’t get the thanks they deserve for doing a job that puts their lives at risk.
But one Tennessee family knows they owe everything to one police officer who heard their cry for help and ran to the rescue.
When 1-year-old Zaire Brown suddenly stopped breathing, his family rushed him to the hospital. They called 911, frantic and terrified as they raced to get the little baby help.
The 911 dispatcher told the family to pull over, and help would be sent to them. But they didn’t have to wait – Officer Robert Baer of the Murfreesboro Police Department heard the call and just happened to be in the area. He rushed to the family.
Body camera footage showed the father rushing the baby to Baer, who immediately placed the baby on his car and started CPR. He pleads with the baby, “Stay with me, buddy!”
The father can be heard begging the baby to stay alive.
Please don’t stop breathing.”
Baer’s first set of chest compressions failed to revive Zaire. Then, according to reports, Baer “picked him up and his eyes rolled in the back of his head.”
He placed the baby back down and began a second round of chest compressions. Finally, a miracle – the baby begins to whimper. Baer quickly reports, “1145, the baby’s breathing,” before EMS and fire rescue arrives to take over.
He said all he could think about while he was giving the baby CPR was not to “be the one to let this kid die.”
When help arrived, the officer could finally stand down. “I felt relief. I don’t know how long I did compressions. In that situation it feels like forever,” he said. “EMS and the fire department said if I hadn’t been there, it may have been a different outcome.”
One week later, Baer was able to meet with Zaire and his mother, Marchelle Brown. He got to hold the little boy who had fully recovered from his ordeal. Doctors are unsure why the little boy stopped breathing, but one thing is for sure – the family knows who kept their son alive.
“I really appreciate it, and thank you very much that you saved my son,” Marchelle told the officer.
The Browns, who tragically lost a child in 2020, told the officer that he was welcome any time. Baer, who has a 3-year-old at home, said he would keep in touch.
I feel like I’ll forever have a bond with that kid,” he said.
The heroic officer said that this rescue will be something he will always remember.
“I’ll never forget the things that took place, the sound he made when he started breathing,” Baer said.
